Biblical Lies

October 2, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Sundays September 11 – October 2, 10am @ Crossroads or
Live Stream

There are simple phrases that sound Christian but aren’t, things like; everything
happens for a reason, God helps those who help themselves or God won’t give you
more than you can handle. These expressions sound like something you might even
find in the Bible and each captures an element of Biblical truth – but they also miss the
point in very important ways. Join us as we search for the whole truth.

Week 1: Everything Happens for a Reason
Scripture: Deuteronomy 30:11-16
This phrase is offered when comforting a friend, sometimes in the worst of
circumstances. When life seems out of control, it is oddly comforting to think that there
is nothing we can do. Moses offered a different possibility and calls us to consider the
choices we make every day that impact our lives.

Week 2: God Said It, I believe It, That Settles It
Scripture: 1 Timothy 2:9-13
We spend a lot of our lives learning “folk” theology. That means we hear things from a
teacher and assume that they are directly from God. What if God is still speaking?
What if what we were taught was wrong? Let’s explore that together this week.

Week 3: God Won’t Give you More Than You Can Handle
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:1-13
Often this phrase is used to call out the inner strength of another. But it is not that
helpful if they feel overwhelmed and it certainly doesn’t say much that is nice about
God’s presence in their life. Where is God and the church when we are at a breaking
point?

Week 4: God Helps Those Who Help Themselves
Scripture: Psalm 10:12-18
God calls us to work hard and secure our future. But if we follow this idea too far it will
impact how we treat others. How do we know when to help others and when to let
people deal with their consequences? This week we will look at how the Bible guides
us to live in community with others.
