Shedding New Light on Parenting Teens
Tomorrow afternoon at 4PM, Crossroads welcomes Heather Kirby (LCSW and CSAC) as she shares "Shedding New Light on Parenting Teens," a parenting seminar focused on building and maintaining healthy relationships with our teens and tweens.
Heather has been practicing therapy for over 20 years, and she specializes in working with adolescents and young adults with anxiety, depression, anger, behavioral challenges, substance abuse issues, social skill deficits, and learning disabilities. Heather is particularly adept at using alternative strategies (like equine therapy) to connect with clients and help them to discover their best self. Her private therapy office is located in Fairfax, VA, and she also offers equine therapy in partnership with Project Horse, Inc. in Purcelleville, VA.
In 2013, Heather wrote an award-winning book called Wild at Heart: Adolescents, Horses & Other Kindred Spirits. Wild at Heart draws on Heather's wide range of experience with adolescents as well as her lifetime love of horses. In the book, she outlines the striking similarities and the important differences between horses and teens and how we can work more effectively with teens by applying principles that are similarly effective with horses.
Additionally, Heather is a very gifted speaker and presenter and has offered workshops and presentations to audiences of all sizes on a variety of topics, generally related to adolescents, mental health, addictive behaviors, and LGBTQ issues. She prides herself on altering her presentations to the specific needs of her audience and engaging the audience to create a fun and thought-provoking experience.
Heather's true professional passion and gifts lie in connecting with teens, young adults, and families through non-traditional therapy methods. She uses recreation, horses, art, music, sand tray, and the vast outdoors to help people relax and feel safe in the therapeutic relationship.
We're so delighted that Heather Kirby is a part of our extended Crossroads family! We hope you'll be able to come and meet her tomorrow in the Sanctuary from 4-6PM. Please email Crossroads' Student and Family Ministries Director Marilyn Perry if you have any questions.
