The Prayer of Examen is an ancient spiritual exercise that will help you to see how God has been present in your day and to see areas of your life that need more growth or healing.
As you practice this spiritual exercise, it is important to remember that in the context of God's love, there is never any condemnation for your weaknesses or shortcomings.
The questions below can help you to move through the process of Examen. Read through all the questions knowing you don't have to answer every question, every day, but it is important to pay attention to the ones which speak to you the most and focus on those. It is helpful to write down your reflections in a journal. This will help you see your story unfolding.
Begin with a moment of silence recognizing God’s presence with you.
Questions to Ask About Your Day:
- When did I feel I was cooperating most fully with God's presence in my life?
- When was I most resistant to God’s presence?
- When did I feel most alive?
- When did I feel most drained?
- When did I give love?
- When did I receive love?
- Where am I harboring resentment toward another person?
Finish your time of examen by praying for God to give you direction and strength to move forward into a new day tomorrow with a heart of compassion, forgiveness, service and wisdom for yourself and others.
